Changing lanes is an opportunity and possibility provided for in German immigration law (Section 10, Paragraph 3, Sentence 5 in conjunction with Sections 18a, 18b, and 19c) for asylum seekers who are skilled workers (a skilled worker is someone who holds a higher technical or university degree) to obtain a residence permit and thus change their asylum seeker status.

Asylum seekers who apply for a change of lane are exempt from the requirement to apply for a visa in their home country to obtain a residence permit, which in practice means that they do not have to leave Germany to obtain their residence permit.
