Recognition, homologation, and validation of foreign diplomas

Regulated professions are professional activities that are governed by legal and administrative provisions and require certain professional qualifications in order to be practiced. The practice of a regulated profession is strictly controlled by the German authorities. In regulated professions, recognition and approval of qualifications is strictly mandatory in order to obtain a visa, a residence permit, and a work permit to practice your profession.

In Germany, the following are among the regulated professions: medicine, nursing, pharmacology, school teachers, and kindergarten teachers. In regulated professions, it is not enough for qualifications to be recognized or comparable to a domestic qualification; all applicants must also obtain a work permit. This permit covers both authorization to work and permission to use the professional title, for example, the title of doctor or teacher.

In the process of recognizing or approving a university degree or vocational training diploma, the German authorities may determine that the foreigner's studies are not comparable to German studies and therefore determine that there is a gap in training and consequently request adaptation measures or remedial courses. The German authorities may require the foreigner to take a theoretical or practical leveling course (practical in a company, theoretical in an institute, or a combination of both) or exam preparation courses and/or language courses. Diplomas in unregulated professions may also present a deficit in recognition.
